Let me clear a few things up

I am Dr. Tamer Salem, a consultant eye surgeon at Spanish Center Dubai. In nearly 30 years of practice, I have heard the same worries about laser eye surgery again and again. Most of them come from outdated information, a scary post online, or a story from a friend of a friend.

If you wear glasses or contacts and have ever wondered whether laser eye surgery could free you from them, this is for you. My goal here is simple: separate what is true from what is not, in plain language, so you can think clearly about your own eyes. Laser eye surgery means using a precise, cool laser beam to gently reshape the clear front window of your eye (the cornea) so it focuses light properly and you see sharply without glasses.

Let me walk you through the five myths I hear most often.

Did you know?

The actual laser treatment on each eye usually takes only seconds, not minutes. Most of your time in the room is spent getting comfortable, positioning you, and the careful step-by-step checks before and after. The part people fear most is often the shortest part of the whole visit.

When to seek urgent care

If you have had any eye surgery and notice any of the following, do not wait. Contact us at Spanish Center Dubai right away, or seek urgent eye care: - A sudden drop or loss of vision - Increasing, severe, or worsening eye pain (rather than the mild scratchiness that settles within a day) - Strong light sensitivity, heavy redness, or discharge from the eye - A sudden shower of new floaters, flashing lights, or a dark shadow or curtain across your vision - A feeling that something has shifted in the eye after a knock or rubbing Mild dryness, watering, haloes around lights at night, or a scratchy feeling in the first days are common and usually settle. The symptoms above are different, and we would always rather see you early than have you wait at home.

Come and get a straight answer

The honest truth is that the only way to know what is right for your eyes is to measure them. If you are curious whether laser eye surgery, or an alternative like ICL, could work for you, I would be glad to take a careful look and tell you plainly, including if the answer is "not yet" or "not for you." You can book a consultation with me, Dr. Tamer Salem, at Spanish Center Dubai. Bring your questions, and we will go through them together.
