Two great options, one choice
I wrote this for anyone weighing up the two. My honest answer up front is that there is no single "best" procedure. The best choice depends on the shape of your cornea, your prescription, and how you live. Let me walk you through the differences in plain language so that when we sit down together, you already understand your options.
The core difference, simply explained
With LASIK, I create a thin, hinged flap within the cornea itself, not on the surface. Think of it like opening a tiny book cover that stays attached on one side. I lift that flap, use the laser to reshape the tissue underneath, then lay the flap back down where it settles into place and heals.
With SMILE, there is no flap at all. Instead, I make a very small opening, about the size of a pinprick, and through it remove a small disc of tissue (called a lenticule) from inside the cornea. Because the opening is so tiny, SMILE is sometimes called "keyhole" laser surgery.
Did you know?
The small disc of tissue I remove during SMILE, the lenticule, is only a fraction of a millimetre thick. Reshaping your vision often comes down to removing tissue thinner than a strand of hair. This is why your exact corneal measurements matter so much, and why I never rush the assessment that comes before any procedure.
A quick way to think about which suits you
As a rough guide, and only a guide: - If you have a moderate nearsighted prescription, healthy eyes, and you want the fastest recovery, **LASIK** is an excellent fit. - If you have dry eyes, play contact sports, or simply prefer the smallest possible incision, **SMILE** is often the better fit. - If you have a very high prescription or thinner-than-average corneas, I may recommend a different approach altogether, such as an implantable contact lens (ICL). The definitive answer comes from your measurements, never from a search engine.
When to call us straight away
Laser vision correction is very safe, but like any procedure it carries some risk, and healing needs watching. Please contact us or seek urgent eye care if, after surgery, you experience any of the following: - Sudden or worsening eye pain that drops are not easing - A noticeable drop in vision rather than a gradual improvement - Increasing redness, discharge, or swelling - Strong light sensitivity that is getting worse, not better - A sensation that the LASIK flap has shifted, or a sudden new shadow or curtain across your vision Do not wait to see if it settles. Call us at Spanish Center Dubai or go to the nearest emergency eye service. Catching a problem early almost always makes it easier to treat.
An honest word on who qualifies
That is exactly what the assessment is for. A thorough scan and measurement of your eyes tells me whether LASIK, SMILE, an ICL, or simply waiting is the safest path for you. If your eyes are not suitable, I will say so and explain the alternatives. Good outcomes start with honest candidacy.
Let's find the right fit for your eyes
The truth is that the best procedure for you is decided by your eyes, not by an article or an internet search. If you are thinking about life without glasses, I would be glad to examine your eyes, measure your cornea, and give you a clear, personalised recommendation. You can book a consultation with me, Dr. Tamer Salem, at Spanish Center Dubai. We will go through your options together and choose the path that genuinely fits you.
