About

What this is

ILUVIEN (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant) has proven results

A 0.19 mg implant is placed inside the vitreous of the eye. This treatment is used for patients with diabetic macular edema who were previously treated with a course of corticosteroids and did not have a clinically significant rise in intraocular pressure.

Based on the results of two clinical studies, ILUVIEN was shown to be a safe and effective treatment for this condition over 24 months.

A single implant delivers enough steroid to last for 36 months.

In the 3-year clinical trials, 75% of the people treated with ILUVIEN needed only one ILUVIEN implant.

How ILUVIEN works

The 0.19 mg implant (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant) delivers a low dose of a steroid called fluocinolone acetonide (FAc) to the retina. This helps treat the inflammation and swelling associated with diabetic macular edema (DME).

ILUVIEN is inserted into the eye through a fine needle, so no surgical stitches are needed. It then releases low, continuous levels of steroid treatment to the retina for 36 months.

The ILUVIEN implant for diabetic macular edema is now available in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is performed at Spanish Center Dubai.

An in-clinic procedure

A single dose of ILUVIEN (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant) 0.19 mg is placed by a retina specialist. It can be done without a hospital admission or stay, and no stitches are needed because it is given by injection into the eye.

Before the procedure, the eye is numbed. During the injection you may feel some pressure and discomfort.

After the procedure, patients usually feel mild pressure on the eye from the injection. It is very important to monitor the patient after an ILUVIEN implant, as it is associated with other eye complications such as endophthalmitis, eye inflammation, raised eye pressure and retinal detachment.

Tell your doctor
