What this is
Lucentis (ranibizumab injection) is a treatment your retina specialist may prescribe for you. It is approved for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration, and it is an FDA-licensed injection for wet macular degeneration.
The eye
The retina is a thin layer at the back of the eye, the part of the eye responsible for capturing what we see. The macula is like a small mark or spot in the retina; it is responsible for central vision and fine detail.

Vision loss
If your doctor has prescribed Lucentis, it means your eye contains extra amounts of a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). It is one of the causes of abnormal blood vessels that grow and leak fluid. The excess fluid leaking from these vessels can build up and lead to changes in your ability to see.

How Lucentis helps
Lucentis is designed to block the excess VEGF protein in the eye. That is why it is called an anti-VEGF treatment: it stops fluid leaking from the blood vessels into the macula, which reduces the swelling.
Lucentis was designed specifically for use in the eye.
Who is a candidate for Lucentis injections?
The injections are used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and macular edema following retinal vein occlusion, both central and branch retinal vein occlusion.
